The third most famous skiing spot in the country, Auli is 12 kms away from Joshimath. There are dozens of trekking routes for those interested in adventure travel; the laidback can enjoy the scenery which is extraordinary.
One road from here leads to the famous Valley of Flowers. The hot water springs are awesome. The skiing centre in Auli was set up in 1984. The Uttar Pradesh Government's Garhwal Mandal Corporation runs this centre. This spot was discovered by the Indian Army posted on the Tibetan border.
Auli is considered the best skiing slope in Asia. Both sides of the slope are covered with oak and coniferous trees which help break the speed of the wind, making Auli an ideal spot for skiing.
HOW TO GET THERE
By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport Dehradun, 273 kms from Joshimath and 17 kms from Rishikesh.
By Road: Joshimath, 13 kms downhill from Auli, is the most convenient roadhead. Joshimath is connected by road to Haridwar (276 kms), Rishikesh (253 kms), Dehradun (295 kms), Delhi (500 kms)
Once in Joshimath, you can hire a car or taxi, or take the bus which climbs up to Auli. A cable car runs between Joshimath and Auli. It covers a stretch of 4 kms and rises from a height of 1,000 mts to 3,000 mts.
By Rail: The nearest railhead is Haridwar, 299 kms from Auli.
