The Bandhavgarh National Park is located in the district of Sahdol in the central India in Madhya Pradesh. This forest, nestled in the Vindhya hills, was commissioned in 1968 when the Maharaja of Rewa handed over the area to the Government. Back then, the wildlife here was in serious trouble due to uncontrolled poaching. However, once it became a protected area, the animal population flourished dramatically. Currently, the park covers an area of 448 square kilometres.
The Sal trees form the main tree-cover in the forest along with bamboo. The park was declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1993.
