Gangtok, meaning the top of a hill, is the capital of Sikkim and stands at an elevation of 1,700 metres. With a population of 30,000, it is Sikkim's largest town. There has been some unplanned development in recent times so the streets can get a wee bit crowded, especially during the peak season in summer and again in October during Dussehra. However, away from the madding crowd of the main town, there are exhilarating walks and splendid natural scenery with some magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga. By Air: The nearest airport is Bagdogra in West Bengal which is 124 kms (about 4 hrs drive) from Gangtok. Bagdogra is well connected by air to all the major cities in India. You can also avail the helicopter service operated by the Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation daily from Bagdogra to Gangtok, which takes about 20 mins.

By Road: Gangtok is well connected to Siliguri, Darjeeling and Kalimpong by the National Highway 31 A. There are regular Sikkim State Transport buses between Gangtok and Siliguri. Private buses, jeeps and taxis can also be hired from Siliguri and Bagdogra. The SNT Bus Stand is located on Paljor Stadium Road. The private bus stand is located 1 km south of this bus stand.

By Rail: The nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, which is about 125 kms from Gangtok (about 4 hrs). New Jalpaiguri is well connected to all major cities in India.
