Haridwar, literally a gateway to four of the holiest pilgrim spots for Hindus, is located on the foothills of the Shivaliks and sits on the banks of the Ganga river. Once the Ganga eventually leaves the mountains and enters the plains, Haridwar is the first major town it touches. Although still rapid, the river starts turning calm from this point on. Pilgrims throng the numerous ghats built on the river shores for a ritual bath to wash away their sins and attain ultimate freedom.
Haridwar is known to have been blessed by the trinity of Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. It is also one of the major Shaktipeeths.
Apart from being a spiritual centre, Haridwar is also a major learning centre for arts, science and culture where the ancient Gurukul tradition of teaching is folllowed to this day.
