Khajuraho,
once the capital of the great Chandelas, is today a village of
about a few thousand people in the interiors of central India,
in Madhya Pradesh. History records the existence of 85 temples
of which only 25 have survived the ravages of time. The
temples which are centre attraction of our Khajuraho tour are an outstanding example of medieval Indian architecture. They were built by the Chandela kings between 950 and 1050 AD. While ancient Indian architecture has some
brilliant stories to tell, few can match the uniqueness of
Khajuraho's temple sculptures. It is a story you must hear
first-hand, standing amid the ancient stones.
The Khajuraho temples are known the world over for their
erotic content. During our khajuraho tour you will feel that these temples speak of another age altogether when love or kama, symbol of life and creation, once had religious sanction along with the other pursuits of life,
economic or otherwise. Depictions of mithuna or loving human
couples were in fact viewed as auspicious symbols of
fertility.
The existing temples of Khajuraho are divided into three
groups, Western, Eastern and Southern. The famous Western
group, now a World Heritage site, stands inside a beautiful
park. The Lakshmana and Vishvanath temples to the front and
the Kandariya Mahadev, Jagdambi and Chitragupta temples at the
rear, showcase Khajuraho at its best.
