Orchha
is sheer poetry in stone, frozen in time, its architecture
dating back to a glorious past of the Bundela kings. The
palaces and temples which were built by the Bundelas in the
16th and 17th centuries are still untouched in their
perfection are the centre peice of attraction of Orchha tour.
Orchha was founded by the Bundela Rajput chieftain, Rudra
Pratap, who discovered this strip of land along the gorgeous
Betwa river as an ideal place for his capital. Of his
successors, the most notable was Raja Bir Singh Ju Deo who
built the exquisite Jehangir Mahal, a tiered palace crowned
with graceful chhatris. From here the view of the soaring
temple spires and cenotaphs is unparalleled. Complementing the
exteriors are the interiors which represent the exquisite
Bundela school of painting. In the Laxminarayan Temple and Raj
Mahal, vibrant murals depicting a wide range of religious and
secular themes make for a delightful experience.
