Yamunotri,
the source of river Yamuna, is accessible from the road
bifurcating from Dharasu on the Rishikesh-Uttarkashi route,
the other road leading up to Gangotri. Yamunotri can also be
accessed from Mussoorie and Barkot. Situated at an elevation
of 3235 metres above sea level, the Yamunotri shrine is one of
the "four dhams" sacred to Hindus. The source of
Yamuna lies about a kilometre ahead at an altitude of about
4421 metres. The approach is extremely difficult so devotees
offer pooja at the temple itself. There are hot springs close
to the temple that provide a refreshing bath after a tedious
13 km trek from Hanumanchatti.
